The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W270 / W290 has a 5x optical zoom lens with an equivalent range of 28-140mm (5-25mm actual), with a maximum aperture of f3.3-5.2. While 5x is never going to manage an impressive performance at both ends of the zoom range, Sony has made the right choice in providing respectable wide-angle coverage that extends through general purpose focal lengths to encompass portraiture and a short telephoto.
While the shutter speed can be adjusted between 30 and 1/1600th of a second, there are only two aperture options, f3.5 and f8 at the wide angle lens setting and f5.5 and f13 and the telephoto lens setting. Furthermore, it appears that the H55 uses a neutral density filter in place of a physical iris diaphragm to adjust the aperture. This has implications for depth of field and image quality which are discussed, along with example images, in our HX5 review.
With the camera powering up from cold in just under 2 seconds, the larger high performance G lens the H55 utilises - largely hidden within the body when inactive - does however provide good edge-to-edge sharpness when used more conventionally at its widest 25mm equivalent setting, and displays minimal barrel distortion. At this widest setting close ups are also possible at a minimum distance of 5cm from your subject.
Blending rich features and value all wrapped up in a slim design, the Cyber-shot W570 digital camera features a powerful 16.1-megapixel CCD image sensor to capture gorgeous images with superb contrast and clarity down to the finest detail. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 seems to be a mix between two models, the TX1 and the TX7. From the former it got video modes and 3 inches LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 230,000 dots. From the TX7 was taken the wide-angle Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with the focal length equivalent of 25-100 mm, a maximum aperture which varies from f/3.5 to f/4.6 across the zoom range and the shutter speed of 1/1600 s.According to the operating manual the camera is waterproof up to 3 m during 60 minutes, gaining the camera an IEC60529 IPX8 rating. The shock proofing should protect the camera from accidental drops as high as 1.5 meters on a plywood surface 5 cm thick, which merits the MIL-STD-810F Method 516.5-Shock rating.
