The most important thing about these albums is that Jarrett does whatever he wants to in his own style. No more historical styles, no more big bands or orchestras. With him you'll find a brilliant interpretation. These albums are a series of masterpieces. People will say that he's not playing jazz, but that's not true. It's more like a fresco. You have an impression, and he has created that impression. But there's much more.
I love this album because he plays The Beatles songs, because they're void of emotion. And I love the way he plays Yoko Ono, it's so tactful. I need tactful music. I love the way he takes The Beatles songs and he's pure with himself. He's not caring about other people. He's pure with himself and he's pure with the people he's playing. He's also pure with his music. So I love his albums.
[Norman Lewis, with Jarrett and band at Newport in 1965] Keith is colorful and unique, he has personality.... It's not a question of playing and just going through the motions. The thing is to follow it, and to be as exciting as Keith's own excitements.
What I like about this album is that he's playing The Beatles songs. It's a beautiful interpretation and you really can hear the original feel of the songs. Playing this, he's in his own style and in his own world but you just pick it up on his phrasing and his way of playing so you understand the concept. If he would just play through, it's lovely. d2c66b5586
