Alongside the release of rFactor 2 Beta 7 came the new DX11 graphics engine (RC5). This opened up a lot of new opportunities such as shader support and VR compatibility. A future release of the DX11 engine should support the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headset.
In May 2017, the public beta was announced to be released in Summer 2017. On June 28, 2017, Studio 397 released the first public beta version. This beta was available on the Mac Store, Windows Store and Steam Store. This beta is build number 206 and is the only stable build available currently. Updates to the beta version will be released after each new beta version is released. In September 2017, the GameTunnel team released a test copy of rFactor 2. This beta is build number 215. Those who register for the beta can run this version on any Linux distribution they want and eventually they will be listed on the game official servers list. Those who do not want to be listed on the server list can use the beta and have fun. In November 2017, Studio 397 released several build number that implement new features. Road America's roadcourse track returns to the racing simulator after a two year hiatus. Minor changes include a resolution adjustment, the return of the missing news ticker, and a new camera view. A towing truck and trailer are added. The Spring Lightning Racing Group hosted the first public beta on November 20, 2017.
