In addition to the two themes mentioned above, the volume also seeks to address the role of institutional frameworks in the internationalization of firms from developing countries. While the industry- and resource-based perspectives have dominated IB research on strategy, institutional frameworks have received little attention (Table 1). Institutional frameworks not only help to understand the strategic decisions of firms from developing economies, but also determine the relative success and failure of emerging economies in the international market (Ghemawat & Argyle, 2003). A better understanding of these frameworks is necessary to enhance the IB field's ability to address the strategic issues of global sustainability and development. In our opinion, this special issue will help to better illustrate the contributions of IB research to the strategic management of emerging economies.
The purpose of this special issue is to stimulate discussion on these two issues. To do so, it solicits theoretical and empirical articles that shed light on the strategic decisions of firms from emerging economies in the context of their internationalization. These two issues are particularly important today, given the increasing integration of international markets, the spread of MNEs to developing countries, and the emergence of new business partners in developing economies (Bückmann, 2004; Kalman, 2002; Khanna, 2006).
